Nationals Senator Fiona Nash said she will be keeping a close eye on petrol prices in Young in the coming days amid fears of a price hike over the holiday period. Senator Nash said while motorists nationwide are worried about the traditional spike in petrol prices in the lead up to Easter, drivers in Young are concerned any rise will impact significantly on household budgets given what is widely considered to be the already over inflated petrol prices in the town. “Petrol prices continue to be a major concern for drivers in and around Young, and with the Easter long-weekend now only days away, motorists are dreading the petrol bill even more,” Senator Nash said. “But there is something local residents can do when it comes to lowering petrol prices in town. I have recently launched an ethanol petition campaign, giving residents the opportunity to add their name to the fight for greater access to cheaper fuels such as ethanol blends. “And if the response to the letterbox petition campaign so far is anything to go by, the people of Young are well and truly fed up with the rising cost of petrol and certainly want better access to cheaper ethanol blends.” Senator Nash said motorists could significantly reduce the cost of their fuel bill by using ethanol blended unleaded petrol or E10, which can be sold up to four cents a litre cheaper than regular unleaded. “The only way we are going to get more ethanol blends available at the cheaper price is to send a strong message to the major oil companies that the public – their customers – want and deserve better,” Senator Nash said. “I urge people to continue sending the postcards back to me to join in the fight for cheaper fuels in Young.” Senator Nash said the Federal Treasurer Peter Costello has asked the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to closely monitor petrol prices nationwide over the Easter period to ensure there is no price fixing at the petrol pump.
