In a further bid to help reduce the cost burden facing local motorists at the petrol bowser, Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has launched a letterbox campaign urging local residents to sign a petition calling on the major oil companies to make ethanol blended petrol more readily available. A long-time ethanol campaigner, Senator Nash said drivers in Young deserve to be able to access the cleaner, greener and cheaper fuel alternative and has sent an ethanol petition postcard to households in Young calling on residents to join the fight for cheaper fuel. “Ethanol blended unleaded petrol or E10, can be sold up to four cents a litre cheaper than regular unleaded,” Senator Nash said. “This is a significant saving considering current fuel prices, especially those in Young which are considered by many to often be far higher than other rural and regional areas. “I have written to the ACCC and to the Federal Treasurer Peter Costello regarding the cost of fuel in Young, and am awaiting the outcome of these representations; however the cost of petrol will always be high as long as we rely solely on fossil fuels for our supply, which is why we need better access to cheaper ethanol blends. “As part of an ongoing campaign for better ethanol availability, my Nationals colleague Member for Burrinjuck Katrina Hodgkinson and I have launched a petition, asking local residents to add their name to the fight to make oil companies provide E10 at more petrol stations. “People can do this simply by signing the reply paid postcard, which I will collect and forward to the major oil companies as evidence motorists want access to ethanol blends. “We’ve all had enough of high fuel prices. The drought continues to impact significantly on the local economy and residents deserve to have the opportunity to save money wherever they can.” Senator Nash said she believes consumer confidence in ethanol blended fuel is on the rise and oil companies are now the only ones standing in the way of a thriving ethanol industry. “If the oil companies continue to fall short of the mark when it comes to providing ethanol blends to motorists, the Federal Government must mandate the annual volumetric targets – agreed upon by the Federal Government and the oil majors – to make sure they meet those targets.” Senator Nash said if households did not receive an ethanol petition postcard in the mail, residents can arrange to have one sent to them by phoning her Young office (freecall): 1300 734 681.
