NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash was joined by hundreds of locals for the official opening this morning of the Young and Region Farmers’ Markets. Senator Nash said she believed the opening of the markets to be the start of a long tradition of successful trading between local producers and the Young community. “We are so fortunate here in Young to have such a diverse range of produce home-grown in the local area, and to be able to buy it straight from the farm is very exciting,” Senator Nash said. “Being so centrally located in the Hilltops Wine and Food region, Young’s reputation for quality produce is growing so to have another avenue for producers to market their products, and for consumers to access them, is certainly worth while.” Senator Nash said the benefits that come with the creation of a farmers’ market are endless; from increased tourism in the town to helping local producers find new markets for their products. “By selling locally grown produce locally, money is staying in the town, providing a boost to the local economy which is so important, particularly while the drought continues,” Senator Nash said. “Farmers’ markets around the country have proven very successful in generating millions of dollars across a number of communities ensuring a strong and robust local economy, and hopefully the markets here in Young can mirror this sort of success. “It’s so important for rural and regional communities to grow and diversify and remain self-sustainable, and it’s initiatives like the farmers’ market that ensure our country towns stay strong and viable for generations to come. “I’d like to congratulate the president of the Young and Region Farmers’ Market Danielle Allen and all involved in getting this initiative off the ground. It certainly is a wonderful asset for our town.” Media contact: Julie Siegert 0429 818 600
