NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash today praised the efforts of the Belmont community in developing and enhancing the services offered through the Sailability Belmont organisation. In Belmont this morning to officially open the new purpose built pontoon and jetty at the Belmont 16ft Sailing Club, Senator Nash said the wonderful services already provided by Sailability Belmont branch to disabled sailors will be enhanced by the new facilities, constructed with the help of a $125,780 grant from the Federal Coalition Government under its Regional Partnerships programme. “One of the key aims of the Federal Coalition Government’s Regional Partnerships programme is to improve access to services within a community and this project here in Belmont is a perfect example of this,” Senator Nash said. “This project provides a safe way for people with a disability to access sailing boats, and improves the safety of the dedicated Sailability team of over 40 volunteers who have previously had to physically lift individuals into boats. “I understand the Sailability Belmont branch is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year which is a wonderful achievement for an organisation that relies so heavily on the dedication of volunteers to remain in operation. “Congratulations to all those volunteers who give up their time to provide clients with the chance to experience the pleasure of sailing. It’s thanks to your passion and dedication that this is one of the most active organisations of its kind in Australia. “Congratulations also to all those involved in developing this particular project, particularly the Sailability coordinator here in Belmont Vicki Engert – your hard work has most certainly paid off.” The Regional Partnerships programme continues the Federal Coalition Government’s approach of working with local communities to support their ideas. A total of $270.5 million is available under the Regional Partnerships programme from 2006–07 to 2009–10. Media contact: Julie Siegert 0429 818 600
