Regional Australians are bracing themselves for another year of Labor’s contempt, Nationals Senator Fiona Nash, said.
2011 saw the carbon tax proposed, the draft Murray Darling Basin (MDB) plan to cut water, regional students struggling to afford tertiary education because of unfair independent youth allowance changes, the struggle to retain and attract GPs to rural towns, the shutdown of live animal exports, increasing red tape on small business, and a lack of delivery in funding for regional infrastructure to name a few.
In 2012, the plight of regional Australians is set to be compounded. Among the biggest concerns this year will be the carbon tax that takes place in July, the Labor government’s legislation for water cuts in the MDB, the effect of a rising national debt on rural communities, and the latest being a leaked report proposing regional flights be moved to Bankstown,” Senator Nash said.
"The former Nationals Leader, John Anderson, said “over my dead body” when Bankstown was proposed as a regional airport about a decade ago, and the Nationals are adamant that that still stands.
“Such a proposal is typical of the second class treatment dished out by Labor to regional Australians for far too long.
“The Nationals will continue its fight for fairness for regional Australia.”
