The addition of new Nationals Senator, Bridget McKenzie, is welcome timing for rural Australia, at a time when the Greens will have the balance of power in the senate.
Bridget McKenzie was elected to the senate in last year’s election as a Nationals Senator for Victoria.
She was sworn in as a Senator today by the Governor-General, along with Nationals Senator for NSW, Fiona Nash, who was re-elected.
“The Nationals are very fortunate to have more talent added to its team,” Senator Nash said.
“Senator McKenzie grew up in rural Victoria and remains based in the country with her office in Bendigo. Her understanding of rural communities will complement the knowledge and experience of that of her federal Nationals colleagues.
“As the Coalition’s Regional Education spokesperson, I also look forward to working with her on education issues with her background in education.”
Senator Nash said the addition of Senator McKenzie brings the number of Nationals in the senate to six.
“Strong representation for rural and regional Australia in the senate is crucial especially now that the Greens have the balance of power,” Senator Nash said.
“The Nationals senate team will fight hard to protect rural and regional communities from the Greens’ radical, city centric agenda.
“Couple that with the Labor-Greens carbon tax, and mounting government debt, it is little wonder why rural Australians are concerned and worried about the future.”
