Roundtable meetings a chance to raise youth allowance concerns

The Coalition’s Regional Education spokesperson, Senator Fiona Nash, urges students to raise their concerns about independent youth allowance at roundtable discussions being held nationally.

They are part of a review into the federal Labor government’s student income reforms. The reforms include unfair changes to the independent youth allowance criteria for students living in `inner regional’ areas.

Labor and the Independents have continually rejected the Coalition’s attempts to immediately fix the problem and make the criteria fair for the thousands of students affected. Labor instead brought forward the review to July 1 this year with any changes to be made at least six months later.

“The roundtable discussions are part of the review’s consultation process and started this week,” Senator Nash said.

“They are a chance for regional students, their families and others to raise their concerns about the unfair changes to independent youth allowance.

“I urge you all to make the most of this opportunity and tell the Review Chair, Professor Kwong Lee Dow, how these changes have affected your lives and made it harder to afford tertiary studies.

“Someone of Professor Dow’s eminence would understand the dreams and aspirations of students.

“But for there to be any real changes, it’s important to have your say and to also make a submission to this review.”
