More than 6,000 spectators are expected to flock to Queanbeyan's newly upgraded Seiffert Oval on Saturday for the highly anticipated return of the Canberra Raiders.
Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said Seiffert Oval will be sparkling for the Raiders' return after big improvements were made to the ground.
“I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to and top class sporting facilities are a big part of that,” Minister Nash said.
“Seiffert Oval now has a new scoreboard, the grandstand has new seats, there's been a fresh paint job and field renovations' there's new irrigation, new balustrades on the grandstands and renovations to the bathrooms, kitchen and canteen,” Minister Nash said.
“The Federal Coalition Government is proud to have invested $500,000 to help Queanbeyan continue attracting top-level events to Seiffert Oval.”
Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council Administrator Tim Overall said Queanbeyan is very pleased to welcome the Canberra Raiders back to Seiffert Oval and is looking forward to seeing a big crowd on Saturday.
“Despite moving to GIO Stadium in 1990, the Raiders still hold a special place in Queanbeyan and we plan on bringing matches of this calibre back to Queanbeyan on a regular basis in the future,” Mr Overall said.
“Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has highlighted the importance of the trial by naming a strong team for the match, and is expecting a large crowd at the match.
“The Queanbeyan Leagues Club contributed $100,000 towards the replacement of the grandstand seats.”
Gates open at 2.45pm with the Raiders under 16s and 18s taking on the Newcastle Knights as a precursor to the main game kicking off at 6.30pm.
To help get patrons to and from the ground a free shuttle bus will be running before and after the match, ferrying spectators from the carpark at the Queanbeyan Leagues Club to Seiffert Oval.
Bus services will run from 4:00pm and immediately following the game. Full catering will be provided.
Tickets are still available online at the Raiders web site and at the gate on game day.
