Nash welcomes new responsibilities

Deputy Nationals Leader Senator Fiona Nash has welcomed her new role of Minister for Regional Development, Minister for Regional Communications and Minister for Local Government and Territories.

“I’m delighted to accept my new role and can’t wait to get to work delivering for the people of regional Australia,” Minister Nash said.

“My vision is to help build country communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and this portfolio positions me perfectly to do that.

“I’m so pleased to be able to see through the exciting policies I’ve driven in regional development – the new Building Better Regions Fund as well as jobs and investment plans around the nation.

“I’m so pleased to continue to help deliver, with Minister Mitch Fifield, the Coalition’s $220 million Mobile Black Spots Programme and to continue the roll out of the NBN to regional, rural and remote Australia – such a game changer for country communities.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Minister Fifield in this portfolio. Minister Fifield is an excellent Minister and a great colleague.

“I’m extremely pleased with my achievements in Rural Health.

  • The recent announcement of a pathway for Rural Generalists, which recognises country health professionals who have far broader skills than the average GP
  • The announcement of a Rural Health Commissioner to help identify these skills, reward them appropriately and create a pathway for those wishing to become a Rural Generalist. The Commissioner will also advocate for rural health
  • The National Ice Taskforce and historic $300 million investment in drug and alcohol treatment which rolls out from July 1
  • Initiating an important independent report into organ donation in Australia and then driving towards important and life-saving reform including online registration for organ donors
  • The Indigenous Health Implementation Plan, which received tri-partisan support
  • Banning cosmetic testing on animals
  • Redirection of $50 million in GP subsidies to doctors in small country towns rather than those in cities as large as Cairns and Townsville (174,000 people).

“Dr David Gillespie is an excellent choice to take over the responsibilities formerly held by me in Rural Health.

“I’m honoured to continue as a Minister in the Coalition Government and look forward to delivering for the people of rural, regional and remote Australia.”
