Being on the road with my fellow Nationals Leadership Team members - Leader Warren Truss, Deputy Leader Nigel Scullion and Senate Leader Barnaby Joyce - has been a fantastic experience.
We travelled through the electorates of Richmond, Page and Cowper and met constituents, party members, media and lots of others. We've all given a speech at every stop and been asked lots of questions.
When Barnaby filled the car with petrol at Urunga he was asked by Fiona behind the counter what the Nationals were going to do about the proposed changes to eligibility to the independent youth allowance. The proprietors of the service station were directly affected by this proposal as their daughter was on a gap year.
Barnaby was able to say, well meet Fiona Nash, she's done something about that. I really enjoy engaging with people and learning what dreams they have for their family and their aspirations for themselves and their business.
These northern NSW electorates are beautiful to visit and those who live there know how lucky they are to be in paradise but it is vital that their voices are heard in Canberra when all is not as good as promised by the Rudd Labor Government.
While the tour is for the serious business of talking about the Nationals new policy platform there are some light moments. We fronted up at the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour for the requisite happy snap. An added bonus was the chocolate-coated bananas we were given.
